We would really like to take the kids to DC this summer. I don't want to post this on my FB because J's family flips every time we don't go to TX for his leave. I've checked most of the DC area post lodging and they all seem to be booked. Do y'all have recommendations of areas to stay that won't cost us a crap load of money? There are 6 of us, so we need two rooms or a suite and budget is a concern. We don't mind driving a little to see sites.

We are going over Memorial Day weekend and got the Mayflower Renaissance for $99/night. It has good reviews and looked like the normal rate was around $200/night. Check out this site for good deals. It changes often but we've had good luck in the past. www.travelzoo.com/hotels/washington-dc/

We live in VA below DC. Honestly, the best places to stay are at the end of Metro lines. Is Quantico booked? I personally would stay away from Southeast and Northwest DC.

NW DC will be the most expensive. SW DC is not somewhere you want to be. NE DC is a nice area and will be much less expensive that NW. Also, most of NE is on the Red Line, the metro line that runs by most of what you'll want to see.
On that note, don't drive anywhere. If you're not used to driving in DC it will take you 10 years to get anyplace and you'll get lost six times along the way and then never be able to find parking. From the Smithsonian metro stop or Metro Center you can get to all the museums, Capitol, White House, Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, WWII, Vietnam, etc... Drive to Arlington because it's farther away and has parking, and Old Town Alexandria if you want to check that out, but anything in DC proper definitely take the metro.
